SIGN THE PETITION FOR A NEW COMMUNITY HUB and LIBRARY IN BRIGHTON LE SANDS

Join THE call to support a new community hub and library at Brighton Le Sands

Bayside Council is planning to redevelop the Boulevard Carpark at Brighton Le Sands; the current plans for the car park focus on improving parking availability, creating a rooftop destination and bringing community facilities into a central location.

So now is the moment for the community to have a voice on what that looks like. With the closure of both the Baby Health Clinic and the small part-time library in Brighton Le Sands, we believe the area is due for new fit-for-purpose community facilities.

Parents with younger children want to access books, especially children in early childhood; and older residents want computer access and a meeting place at a community hub.

A new modern, flexible community hub and library on the ground floor of the new Brighton Le Sands car park would create a beating heart for the community. It would provide a safe, non-commercial space for people of all ages and abilities, making the whole precinct more attractive. Currently, the option for this space is either community or commercial space - and we support it being a community space!

With many high-rise apartments around Brighton Le Sands, this would also enable a larger playground or community square at Heslehurst Reserve, to create a vibrant go-to place for local residents.

“Supporting and building community wellbeing is increasingly our core focus. In light of the current cost of living crisis there has been a major shift towards providing more free and low costs services, especially for our most marginalised communities. It's been so wonderful to see so many council-run libraries stepping up as important community hubs” Linda Scott, President - Australian Local Government Association - National Press Club Address, 3 July 2024

Local mum, Ann says:“A small library at Brighton Le Sands would be such a good initiative. We walk to Kogarah Library weekly but I know my 3-year-old son would appreciate it if there was another library that he can walk to. A library is not just a place to read and learn. For a young child, a library is a place for community bonding outside of our homes and daycare/preschool. He enjoys the weekly story time at the library, he interacts with the librarian and he does arts and crafts there. It’s such an important place of development for young children.”

Another local mum, Lenka says: "It takes 30 minutes to walk, pushing a pram with two screaming babies to Rockdale Library. We need more than just parking and we have enough commercial spaces in Brighton Le Sands. We want change and to transform Brighton Le Sands into a community-friendly place and restore the area's reputation.”

“Libraries are safe, inclusive places for young and old. For parents of little kids, it’s also a low-cost and educational way to get out-and-about, especially on rainy days. I’ve heard that kids of families who frequent libraries and borrow books have improved vocabulary and literacy levels and tend to do better in school.

– Andrea, local mum
